'Fast Track' Workshops

The aim of my 'Fast Track' Workshops is to get you up and running as quickly as possible. There are no heavy notes to wade through, no tests involved or wasting precious time with things you may already know.

We get straight in to the subject at YOUR own skill level. Suitable for all levels from complete beginner, to experienced and professional photographers. Some Computer user experience would be an advantage for those wishing to take part in Workshops #4 and #5.

Workshops are usually run with no more than three students and very often will be on a one to one basis.

Workshop dates are arranged on demand wherever possible, making it easier to fit them in around other things in your life. Payment can be made by cash, Paypal or credit card.

All the workshops are held at my home at The Garrison in Shoeburyness. Workshops that include a location shoot are also based in the immediate vicinity. The area has everything required to cover all types of location, sea and beach, wildlife reserve area, lake, and historic architecture as well as urban locations.

To request more information or to book a place on any of the workshops contact me on 07768 818378. Alternatively, you can use the 'Contact Me' form. Select from the menu items on the left of the page.

Workshop #1 • Practical 'Street Photography'

Street photography is a type of documentary photography that features subjects in candid situations within public places such as streets, parks, beaches, malls, public events and other settings.

Street photography uses the techniques of straight photography in that it shows a pure vision of something, like holding up a mirror to society. Street photography often tends to be ironic and can be distanced from its subject matter, and often concentrates on a single human moment, caught at a decisive or poignant moment.

On the other hand, much street photography takes the opposite approach and provides a very literal and extremely personal rendering of the subject matter, giving the audience a more visceral experience of walks of life they might only be passingly familiar with. In the 20th century, street photographers have provided an exemplary and detailed record of street culture in Europe and North America, and elsewhere to a somewhat lesser extent.

Black and white has been the aesthetic (and practical) choice of many street (as opposed to reportage) photographers, because especially in a street setting with random colours everywhere, black and white clarifies the intent of the image. This is not to say powerful colour street photography is not possible. In fact there many well known street photographers who work only in colour. It is really a question of what works for you.

ON THIS ONE DAY WORKSHOP - Learn top tips, techniques and tricks of the trade from Peter Bolton LRPS • Building confidence and conquering your fear of shooting strangers on the street • Observation and learning the art of story telling through pictures • Knowing your camera • Techniques for zone focusing, exposure and composition • Understanding the different styles of street photography and discover what works for you • A project mentality and developing your own style as a street photographer •

The first sixty minutes of the day is spent over coffee discussing the structure of the workshop and how we approach the practical aspects. Then we get out into the chosen location and practice street photography under the guidance of Peter Bolton LRPS. Towards the end of the workshop we will review your images and discuss the pros and cons of the work we have done. The whole point of the day is to enjoy the experience and be better informed and equipped to go out and create your own street images.
